In 1963 the observatory was set up atop of a look-out tower. Since that time about 1,500 visitors per year have entered the dome to get a first glimpse of the stars and planets and to receive additional information concerning the basic principles of astronomy and astrophysics. In the meantime the observatory's equipment encompasses three telescopes of medium aperture (125/1875mmm Lichtenknecker refractor, 210/2100m newtonian, 300/1680mm newtonian) which are equatorially mounted. The Public Observatory Rothwesten was founded by Mr. Georg Spitzer (1925-1989). Our main interest lies in public observations, observational astronomy and general astrophotography. In 1985 the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande was awarded to Mr. Georg Spitzer by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
